The Cheaper Show opens Black and Yellow, a Year Round Project Space at The Waldorf

Black and Yellow is a new gallery located in The Waldorf in Room 106. It is a year round project space supported by The Cheaper Show. Its mandate is to research and exhibit emerging artists producing innovative and challenging work. The gallery is not limited to any particular media or disciplines and instead encourages diversity from show to show.

Black and Yellow is pleased to present an exhibition of painting, sculpture and video:
Warp Yarn | New Works by Simon Redekop, Sean Montgomery, and Maya Beaudry.

Opening Reception April 1st 7pm-10pm

A Part of Opening Weekend of Art in April at The Waldorf
Room 106
The Waldorf Hotel
1489 East Hastings
Vancouver, BC

Warp Yarn refers to the thread on a loom that forms the lengthwise weave. It is the bridging infrastructure for every knit. Fittingly, Warp Yarn is the premier show at Black and Yellow. For this exhibit, each artist employs a different method of weaving. Simon Redekop uses interlacing paint and video to develop uniquely braided spaces. Maya Beaudry physically knots, knits, and frays 50 feet of rope producing a rich suspended installation. While Sean Montgomery threads both material and narrative, connecting stereotypes of masculine Canadiana with the “boys club” bravado of Abstract Expression. After the opening on April 1, the gallery is open to the public 10am to 10pm daily.

About the Artists

Simon Redekop is a multidisciplinary artist who currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. Redekop has worked collaboratively with the Vancouver based artist collective Humanfive. From 2000 – 2007, the collective had solo shows in Vancouver, Calgary, Portland, San Diego, Tokyo and Barcelona. To date he has had 3 solo exhibitions of his work in Vancouver at The Crying Room, Parking Spot and Jeffrey Boone Gallery. Redekop’s work explores the imagination and often investigates themes of consciousness, paradox, social activity, individual perception and detachment. More over intuition, reprocessing, humor and play strongly influence his approach and process of making art. Initially working with painting, drawing, collage and sculpture, more recently Redekop has focused his efforts on incorporating video, animation and sound into his practice.

Maya Beaudry was born and raised in Vancouver. Her work is an ongoing search for the magical properties embedded in the forms and patterns of her BC childhood. She currently studies sculpture at Emily Carr University. Black and Yellow is pleased to host Beaudry for her debut installation in a gallery space.

Sean Montgomery is an artist from Edmonton, Alberta, who currently lives and works in Ithaca, New York. He holds a BFA from the University of Alberta and a MFA from Concordia University. He makes paintings, drawings, and painting based objects that explore notions of masculinity, specifically its representation through Canadian iconography, as well as concerns surrounding issues of social class. The work also examines artistic hierarchies, the status of the artist, and notions of modernist purity, specifically as these concerns relate to painting itself, the extended practices of painting and the history of abstraction. He is represented by Laroche/Joncas in Montreal, Quebec.
