New Research – AI and Advanced Analytics: Connecting Culture, Ethics and Society in a Machine Age

June 6, 2018, by Mary Allen

InsightaaS and sister community, the CABC, have added a new report - AI and Advanced Analytics: Connecting Culture, Ethics and Society in a Machine Age to its growing list of publications.

To celebrate launch of our report on this timely topic, the CABC held a Meetup at the Workhaus downtown Toronto co-workspace. The event opened with a 'spotlight presentation' from integrate.ai's Tyler Schnoebelen who spoke on the "Ethics of Everybody Else," followed by a panel discussion featuring CABC report contributors Victor Garcia (Schulich School of Business), Travis McTeer (GoodLife Fitness), Stephen Gilles (Dimensional Strategies) and Jamie McDougall (Gore Mutual Insurance). Blockchain for the data centre – value add or just more hype?

May 23, 2018 by Don Sheppard

Use cases for Blockchain are growing at an exponential rate, and though it's still early days, IT consultant and author Don Sheppard can see applications for data centre operations as well, which he shares in this article.

Noting some of the "pretty big claims" made for Blockchain, Sheppard has outlined increasing data centre complexity - and the potential to create trusted relationships between a melange of service delivery providers in the "extended data centre." Does this create value? To learn more on Blockchain and how distributed ledger may be applied to DC challenges, click here.

Harnessing the power of Niagara (supercomputer)

April 4, 2018 by Mary Allen

New demand for data processing in the rapidly approaching “zettabyte era" is creating a corresponding requirement for compute capacity. How are data centre operators responding?

In the academic community, where the supercomputer rules, the goal is to maximize resource delivery while minimizing extraneous software features.SciNet's Scott Northrup describes the 'no frills' approach to data centre operation adopted in the build of Canada's largest research computer, Niagara, a bare metal system with no GUIs, but massive parallel processing power. "It’s a stripped-down race car – there are no windows on it," he explained.

Save the date! For Sustainability, advanced IT and the triple bottom line future

October 4th, brought to you by InsightaaS and the IoTCC

Activities in the IT world aimed at reducing carbon footprint have been identified with various labels over time: green IT, sustainable tech and IoT, in some cases, have all been used to describe a "smart" building or other "smart" system. But how has the underlying technology foundation for these activities changed? And how the multiple inputs to carbon reduction - cloud, end user computing, networking, IoT, analytics, advanced reporting, IT efficiency - are working together to making change today was the discussion challenge for the IoTCC Sustainable IT working group.

With this dialogue complete, InsightaaS and the IoTCC have just confirmed a Meetup date and location to launch publication of the next report in our community-based research series, Sustainability, advanced IT and the triple bottom line future More detail to come, but mark October 4th at 6:15pm on your calendar for a visit to Workhaus, Wellington St. to join the discussion.
