Spotlight on - Scarlet Eve

In this section we feature one of our sellers, so that you can find out some more information about the people behind the store and the products they sell.

"Scarlet Eve is handmade luxury for every woman, every cycle.

A very special time in a woman's life cycle is just after the birth of a baby. When often the focus is on the squishy newborn, it would be nice to have a little care and attention on the physical comfort of a new mother.

The Scarlet Eve Uber Pads are designed for comfort, absorbency and have special features. They are a pocket pad, but not in the usual way - the inner absorbent bamboo is sewn in at one end, and can be flipped out for thorough washing and faster drying. This pocket is fantastic for slipping a plastic covered icypole in to ease any perinieal or haemorrhoid swelling. Uber pads are also available in Uber Long size for heavier blood loss.

Once your milk comes in and your baby has been feeding for a few days, you will need something soft and absorbent against your sensitive nipples. Scarlet Eve Breast Pads are made with 2 layers of sewn in bamboo fleece, topped with your choice of soft flannel, velour, microfleece, cotton or microsuede. They are usually backed with breathable, (mostly) waterproof PUL - but can be custom made without if you would like. Just email me"

Frequently Asked Questions

We answer some questions often asked about reusable menstrual products.

Q: What do I do with them when I am out in public and have to change?

A: If you are going to be changing your pad while away from home, you may like to make or purchase a "wetbag". This is a small waterproof bag that can hold your used pads so you can bring them home to wash them. You can find a selection of wetbags in our "bags and pouches" category.

If you're desperate, a small PVC pencilcase or makeup bag may also do the trick. Despite the "wet" part in the name, you don't fill the bag with water! Just fold the pad up and put it inside, dry.

Pads can often be folded into a compact little bundle, making them fit in small bags. All you need to do is fold the top of the pad over into the centre, then fold the bottom up, then snap the wings over to close it up. The used side of the pad is then all wrapped up on the inside of the bundle, lessening any odour or leakage. Not all pads will fold up this way, ones with flared ends don't tend to fold up as easily. But give it a try!

If you don't want to worry about carrying lots of spare pads with you, you might like to consider using a menstrual cup. These are a reusable alternative to a tampon, being worn internally to catch the flow. They will hold around 20-30mls, depending on the brand and size cup, which for many women will be enough to go out during the day without needing to empty the cup. When the cup does need emptying, that can be done in a public toilet - the cup is removed and the contents emptied into the toilet. The cup can be wiped with toilet paper, or a wet cloth, and reinserted.

Another option, if you don't like the idea of internal products, but can't carry a lot of pads, is a Labinni pad. These are folded in half lengthways and tucked into the labia, where they absorb the flow like a pad would, but closer to the source :) They are small and easier to carry around. Not as absorbent as a pad, so would need to be changed regularly, depending on how heavy your flow is, and wearing a backup pad is recommended. But these offer an alternative that can be useful when spending time away from home.
