I attended the emergency USF Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting yesterday afternoon. There is no question that the proposed Senate budget proposal would be devastating to: USF, our students, the Tampa Bay region, and the State. As President Genshaft, the Board of Trustees, and members of the USF administration, alumni, and friends so eloquently expressed at the BOT meeting, "Now is the Time for Action." The President's e-mail below contains all of the information you need to send an effective, personalized e-mail to your legislative representatives and to the Governor. I urge you to act today, on your personal time and using your personal e-mail accounts, to let your very strong voices be heard! Now is the time to mobilize all of your networks. Once again, thanks for all you do to educate the next generation of educators and educational leaders. We've got "a whole lot of educating to do" convincing policy makers about the importance of higher education to the education, health, and well-being of Floridians and to the economic recovery of our State.

Ann Cranston-Gingras appointed Chair of the Department of Special Education

Ann Cranston-Gingras, Ph.D., has been appointed as Chair of the Department of Special Education, effective May 5, 2012. Cranston-Gingras is a Professor of Special Education, Director of the Center for Migrant Education and Acting Chairperson of the Department of Adult, Career and Higher Education. Read more.

Gladis Kersaint Recipient of National Technology Leadership Award

Congratulations to Gladis Kersaint, Ph.D., and her co-authors (Hollylynne Lee, Suzanne Harper, Shannon Driskell, Keith Leatham) who are recipients of the National Technology Leadership Award for their paper titled, "Teachers' statistical problem solving with dynamic technology: Research results across multiple institutions" from the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.

Luis Perez

Luis Perez to attend Summer Institute for Apple Distinguished Educators

For the fourth year in a row, Luis Perez has been selected by Apple to attend the Summer Institute for Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE's). This year's institute was more competitive than most because it is a global event to be held in Cork, Ireland and it was open to all ADEs worldwide (more than 1,500 people).

Perez is an alumnni of the Instructional Technology program and is currently enrolled in the Special Education doctoral program. He anticipates defending his dissertation later this year. Perez said, "I am really looking forward to attending and bringing back what I learn to the USF COEDU."

COEDU alumna Monica Verra-Tirado, Ed.D., (Educational Leadership, '09, M.A., Special Education '96, B.A., Elementary Education, '92) will lead Florida's Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services in administering the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and providing technical assistance to schools, districts and families.
