I'm excited to be the first to share with you that we've just added Jay Bakker to the lineup of Soularize 2011 presenters in San Diego, California!

Jay has been a wonderful friend for a number of years now, and I love his deep passion for "the unconditional love and grace of Jesus without any reservations due to their lifestyles or background, past or future."

Jay Bakker: A Brief Introduction

If you're not familiar with Jay, he is the 35 year old pastor of Revolution NYC, who grew up witnessing both the good and bad of the church. His parents are Jim and Tammy Faye, ministers-turned-TV-hosts who helped start both the Trinity Broadcasting Network and the 700 Club in the 1970’s, and later founded the PTL (Praise The Lord) Club.

By witnessing firsthand the excommunicative treatment his family received from the church, he has had a unique vantage point to see and experience its dark underbelly. As a result, Jay started a church for those who feel rejected by traditional approaches to Christianity, and he speaks around the country on a regular basis. He is also the author of Fall to Grace: A Revolution of God, Self & Society.

GOVERNMENT: A SPIRITUAL DILEMMA

Sometimes I can’t decide if I’m a bleeding-heart Democrat, a Libertarian or an Anarchist at heart. Depends on the day of the week and how much fiber I had for breakfast, I guess. On the one hand, I feel morally compelled by my faith to advocate for social support programs that help the poor or marginalized. I’ve been a vocal advocate for single-payer universal health care and for so-called “welfare” programs. IDEALISTIC GREAT EXPECTATIONS?

Here’s a question I posed on Facebook after blogger John Shore reminded me that when talking up my books, I have two choices as an author: 1. Kiss up and act nicey-nicey so I can get myself strategically positioned on the Christian author/speaker circuit as the latest holy hipster type dealie or 2. Say what I feel needs to be said but then accept the fact that I will be shut out out of many Christian circles, a move that does impact one’s ability on a short-term basis to sell one’s stuff. Is it too idealistic to expect people not to morph into religious rock stars and become partisan progressives once they start landing book deals and get on the Xn author/speaking circuit? read more

SISYPHUS AND SACRILEGE

Sisyphus. I know, his name sounds like a communicable disease. But in Greek mythology, Sisyphus was a great king and founder of the ancient city of Corinth. In his day he was an entrepreneur of Trump-like proportions and presided over his territorial and commercial empire with amazing skill. And like any Wall Street tycoon or mega-corporate CEO, he was cagey and innovative, wealthy and creative. His tactics, however, more resembled those of Tony Soprano than Jack Welch. Sisyphus was a deceptive, murderous, untrustworthy fellow. This was not a man with whom you conducted business with only a handshake. One had better come to the table ready for a fight, or at least protection against getting whacked. read more

IT'S COLD OUTSIDE

What we know is comfortable and inside the walls of what we know are more people who know that same thing. It often seems to cold and vast outside of what we know, think we know, and believe with all our heart. Whether inside of a particular church community, a particular sect of Christianity, or a specific set of beliefs it is hard to step outside of what is comfortable and warm.

ANXIETY AS A FIRST-TIME GUEST...AT A WICCAN WEEKEND

DID YOU KNOW THERE'S A SYMPHONY IN THE BIBLE

It’s not the New York Philharmonic, but it is filled with beauty and wonder. It’s the unity of Christian believers in worship. The Greek word sumphoneo, where we get our modern English word Symphony is used to describe being in agreement, in unison, in one accord, to speak together, to concur with one another. Jesus said, “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. For where two or three have gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst.” (Matt.18:19-20) Evidently, agreement creates power: the power of answered prayer, the power of the Presence of God.

PANCAKE DEVOTIONS

As the clock turns just past six, I anticipate the sound of little feet and a very loud voice entering my room. My son is a loud talker from 5:30 to 9:00 in the morning. I used to wonder why the volume and the intensity at these God forsaken hours only, but here’s what I have learned. Although I am not a morning person, and I have a tough time getting out of bed even on my best days, there is a spiritual discipline that I am growing in. My devotions do not consist of a book or silence or the usual methods I have been coached in throughout my Christian upbringing. There is little time or focus upon prayer. God is not really present – at least not consciously as a focus for my son and I. You may rightly wonder how can these be devotions? Michael you’ve got to be fooling me. My usual morning routine is one of many joys I have learned to appreciate since becoming a father. It is part of the soul making that happens with my wife and me on a daily basis. read more
